Is this the first pop song about the clitoris?

Have you seen this catchy song about the clitoris? Refinery29 have made a musical history of the clitoris and it’s wonderful! If you’ve read some of my posts about the clitoris here and here, you’ll know why I was ecstatic over this tune!

If you know the ins and outs of sexology and sex history you might want to watch it a few times to spot all the multitudes of references in there! And look at this magnificent, pink  room with a big crimson internal clitoris bedhead (maybe?) above the couch! So lush and glam!

clitoris-1024x620

For nearly all of recorded human history, women’s sexuality has been defined for them by men. Men have focussed on the vagina as women’s primary sexual organ because it happens to correspond to their idea of sex (i.e. vaginal penetration). And, let’s face it, vaginal intercourse feels good to most men, and it most often leads them to orgasm. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most women!

The history of the clitoris is about the history of the oppression of femininity through culture, religion, politics and science. This is a history of the neglect, denial, and subordination of feminine pleasure, autonomy, and identity that lies at the root of misogyny

Singer Dorian Electra

The colourful video clip takes on us an exciting and colourful historical journey from a woman’s perspective about the clitoris and sexual pleasure. Dorian even has internal clitoris earrings that appear to glow in the dark!

We travel through hyper-real, colourful scenes through witch burnings where religions have controlled female sexuality, the male form as the ultimate model in Ancient Greece, references to Pandora and her box, medicine in the 1700’s on a dissection table and psychology and we even meet a very drag, complete with suspicious unruly beard and glasses consisting only of frames-Mr Freud himself.
Freud believed that clitoris sexual stimulation was immature and childish and that a real adult woman would only enjoy sex through vaginal penetration. He called the vagina “an atrophied penis.” I love the scene where Dorian transforms into a mock “little girl” sending up Freud’s propositions that only women who were immature acting like little girls liked to enjoy clitoral pleasure. There’s a lot of playful imagery to make a more serious point.

Dorian talks about how studying Freud’s ideas impacted her sexuality growing up,

My classmates and teachers were all very immediately critical of Freud, and although I was, too, I wanted to try to get as much value as I could out of reading his works and perhaps I took him too seriously, because this notion of the clitoral orgasm being immature kind of stuck with me. It started to subconsciously fuel this idea that I was immature, that I wasn’t fully a woman because I didn’t embrace my passive, receiving role in heterosexual, vaginal intercourse. So, as you can see, I have some personal beef with Dr. Freud that I needed to resolve with him publicly in this music video.

Dorian Electra even visits a very glam, hyper 60’s world of Masters and Johnsons lab where they tried to understand female desire.

There’s even pretty glass hanging internal clitorises! I can’t tell what they’re hanging off.. Is it a wind chime? Is it a clitoris chandeleir? Whatever it is I want one!

The delightful singer wears a full body clitoral suit in one scene and dances about in co-ordinated moves with women wearing shining vulva bodysuits. The climax (see what I did there?) is when the internal clitoris is finally discovered and mapped and the world is shocked because it’s ten times its size.

Dorian Electra explains why she made the video,

Women’s bodies are too often sexualized and objectified for the pleasure of others. In order to combat that, I wanted to create something to educate about women’s sexuality, history, and female sexual anatomy that was from a woman’s perspective for a change! I’m a pop musician, and I like to use sex appeal as a tool and a part of my art.

The more people understand the breadth and variety of women’s experience, the more we can accept, understand, and celebrate the diversity of those experiences. And, furthermore, not just to women, but to all gender identities, children, and especially teens who are just learning about their own and others’ bodies. The ideas we learn about sexuality at a young age are so important and can stick with us for the rest of our lives.

I’ve posted the lyrics are below for your enjoyment..

The clitoris
It’s been a mystery
The clitoris
It’s my anatomy
The clitoris
Much more than you can see
If you get to know it, you can get to know me.

In the days of old
Man’s form on pedestals
But girls less than ideal
We were not taught to feel

Then into the Dark Ages when witch hunts were all the rage
The key to see if she’s a witch or not lies right between her legs
‘Cause if you see the mark of Satan
then you know there’s no mistakin’
she’s been taken desire
Throw her on the fire

Fear inside
Pandora’s Box
opening wide
Sinful seat of delight
Earthly pleasures hidden far out of sight

The clitoris
It’s been a mystery
The clitoris
It’s my anatomy
The clitoris
Much more than you can see
If you get to know it, you can get to know me

Learned men of science
Still some would deny it
Anatomists’ dissections weren’t enough for them to buy it
The few who did uncover it
Would argue who discovered it
This excavated treasure, the source of woman’s pleasure

Then Dr. Freud came along
Told me I was doing it all wrong
I need to graduate the way I masturbate
From the clitoral to the vaginal

Did he know
What goes on inside that hole
He couldn’t see
All stimulation happens clitorally

They say I’m frigid and cold and I need to be controlled
Or that I’m too hot, demented, disordered, hysterical
Or that I’m crazy or lazy too mild or wild and baby
They get to decide what’s natural and factual

Even doctor’s textbooks
Yes, they would forget it
The clit they would omit and really not even regret it

So scientists set out
To find out all about
This old orgasmic mystery and settle any doubt

In 3D
The clit was mapped architecturally
To the world’s surprise
It was found to be ten times its size

The clitoris
Shouldn’t be a mystery
The clitoris
It’s my anatomy
The clitoris
Much more than you can see
If you get to know it, you can get to know me

We can come to understand
Worlds of pleasure in our hand
Study up and come with me
The clitoris will be set free

The internal clitoris

Internal Clitoris

The clitoris is the only human organ whose sole function is sexual pleasure.

Most people think the clitoris is just a small “knob” at the top of the lips under the hood. This “glans” has 8,000 sensory nerve endings -that’s more than double the nerve endings in the glans of the penis and more than any other area on our body!

The clitoris interacts with over 15,000 nerve endings over the whole pelvic region. It’s made up of the same erectile tissue as the penis glans and engorges with blood upon arousal. However telling women that their clitoris is nothing more than a “bean” is like telling men their genitals are nothing more than the head of their penis. The glans is only the tip of the iceberg!

Internal Clitoris

In 1998 Australian Urologist, Helen O’Connell, showed us the worlds first clearest imaging of the internal clitoris. O’Connell was frustrated with the vast amount of medical information on male genitals and the scarce information on female genitalia functioning.

O’Connell discovered the clitoris glans is connected to an internal clitoris shaft, which is made up of two corpora cavernosa. During clitoral erection, these 3 ½ inches long and 2 ½ inches wide structures engorge with blood and “embrace” the vagina. So you’re actually stimulating the internal clitoris when you are stimulating inside the vagina.

The Internal Clitoris

The internal clitoris also has two wishbone shaped crura which stretch toward the spine when erect. It’s much more complex than we imagined!
O’Connell says, “The vaginal wall is, in fact, the clitoris. If you lift the skin off the vagina on the side walls, you get the bulbs of the clitoris – triangular, crescental masses of erectile tissue.”

clitoris

It wasn’t until 2009 that researchers in France -Dr. Odile Buisson and Dr. Pierre Foldès- completed the worlds first complete 3-D sonography of the aroused clitoris. It is very telling that they had to self fund their research.

Foldès performs reconstructive surgery on women who’ve suffered genital mutilation in an effort to restore their sexual sensitivity. Foldès was dumbfounded by how little research has been done about the clitoris and its functions, when he found thousands of extensive and well funded studies into the penis and surgical procedures.

“When I returned to France to treat genital mutilation, I was amazed that they were never tried. The medical literature tells us the truth about our contempt for women. For three centuries, there are thousands of references to penile surgery, nothing on the clitoris, except for some cancers or dermatology -and nothing to restore its sensitivity. The very existence of an organ of pleasure is denied, medically. Today, if you look at the anatomy books that all surgeons have, you will find two pages above. There is a real intellectual excision. “

I’m disappointed by the lack of attention given to the clitoris. Medical textbooks simplified the clitoris to a small nub and in the 1940’s it was erased from anatomy diagrams altogether! It is an injustice to deny this epicentre of female sexual pleasure.

What you never knew about the clitoris!

For International Clitoris Week I’m going to harp on about the clitoris some more! The clitoris is such an incredible organ! It has more nerve endings than anywhere else on the human body, and twice as many on the end of the penis!

The Internal Clitoris
This incredible organ is not just a ‘bean,’ (that’s just the tip of the iceberg!) but actually mainly internal! The ‘glans’ (or ‘bean’) is connected to the shaft of the internal clitoris, which is made up of two corpora cavernosa.  When excited and erect, the corpora cavernosa swell full of blood around the vagina, as if they were wrapping around it giving it a big embrace!
These corpora cavernosa have two crura (looks like a wishbone when resting and not excited!) which  stretch toward the spine when erect. They’re coloured in a darker colour in the picture to the left.

So when the vagina is being stimulated the internal clitoris is also being stimulated! clitoris

You can see from the picture on the right, that the internal clitoris is very similar to the penis! In fact, I’m often disappointed by the lack of attention and research given to this increible organ. Textbooks often only show the external glans with no drawings depicting the inner clitoris! It is only recently (in the 1990’s) that a MRI was done of the clitoris for health and research, whereas men had already thirty years of research into pleasure and nerve endings in their penis!

An Australian Urologist, Helen O’Connell was the first person to show the world of medicine what the internal aroused  clitoris looked like in 1998. Medical papers published in response to her findings admitted that social mores had a lot to do with the lack of research into the clitoris and that it is “seemingly impossible it is to understand the internal structure of the clitoris with just one diagram.  Several are required to truly get a comprehensive understanding of it.

Internal ClitorisIt wasn’t until 2009, that researchers in France -Dr. Odile Buisson and Dr. Pierre Foldès did the worlds first complete 3-D sonography of the stimulated clitoris.  It says a lot about how we view the clitoris, that they couldn’t get any funding, and had to self fund their research for three years!

Dr Foldès is a surgeon for women who have undergone clitoral mutilation and has given pleasure back to thousands of circumsized women. Internal ClitorisHe too was amazed by how little research has been done over the years into the clitoris, when he found thousands of studies into the penis.

So there you have it! We are only now beginning to understand the internal workings of the complex and fascinating female genitals! Is it any wonder women can be confused when some of this important information is not included in textbooks?

Happy International Clitoris Week!

Happy International Clitoris Week everyone! It is the first ever Clitoris Week and is organised by “Clitoraid,” a Las Vegas-based group usually devoted to helping victims of female genital mutilation around the world. They celebrate sexual freedom and pleasure for all women in the world..

“The clitoris, this extraordinary organ of pleasure boasting the most nerve endings of all the human body (8,000 compared to 5,000 for the penis) has been ostracized from society for millennia because of religious dogma condemning women’s sexual pleasure. It has therefore been ill-studied (if at all), misrepresented (if at all) and of course made shameful. It is only in the last 5 years that it has finally been completely mapped and It appears that this organ actually rivals with a man’s penis in size. During echo graphic studies, the clitoris was found to reach eight inches in length made of thick highly pleasurable erectile tissue wrapped around the vulva and the pelvic floor. (which is why it is possible to restore a mutilated clitoris.)”

When parents get hysterical about sex education and try and ban books.

Wow. A mother in America wants The Diary of Anne Frank to be banned from her daughters school because of a passage where Anne writes about discovering her own genitalia.  I remember this was a text at my school in Year Seven, but that excerpt hadn’t been allowed to be published at the time. I think Anne Franks family had requested it be removed.
It’s quite a mature and insightful passage of self awareness and body exploration by such a young girl. Would this passage get you into hysterics if your young daughter read it?  I personally don’t see anything wrong with this innocent paragraph of self discovery and curiousity around one’s own body. In fact for someone so young, she had incredible insight and perception into her own body!  Read the section and see for yourself;
“Until I was eleven or twelve, I didn’Anne Frankt realize there was a second set of labia on the inside, since you couldn’t see them. What’s even funnier is that I thought urine came out of the clitoris…When you’re standing up, all you see from the front is hair. Between your legs there are two soft, cushiony things, also covered with hair, which press together when you’re standing, so you can’t see what’s inside. They separate when you sit down and they’re very red and quite fleshy on the inside. In the upper part, between the outer labia, there’s a fold of skin that, on second thought, looks like a kind of blister. That’s the clitoris.”

This Michigan mother said the phrases made her uncomfortable and that the diary was “pornographic.” After reading the above paragraph what do you think? There seems to be such a hysteria about children learning about their own genitals and functioning. I don’t see anything pornographic about young people learning about their own biology do you?
